People pay soooo much for ripped jeans, which is kind of ironic because they’re “ripped”, haha. Ever since I was in about 6th grade I have been ripping my own jeans. It’s pretty simple, but a little time consuming because of the last step. Over the years I have had a lot of questions on how I rip my own jeans, so I wanted to write a detailed tutorial on how to rip your jeans so they look professional! These DIY ripped jeans are super easy to make, and you can do it in under an hour.

Anna’s tip of the day: I advise to go to your local thrift store and find a pair of jeans that fit and are in good shape, because you can save a lot of $$! I found mine at Goodwill for only $7!
Materials you will need to make DIY ripped jeans:
- Scissors
- Tweezers
- Chalk or a marker that can show up on your jeans.
Step One
The first thing you need to do is mark off where you want to have rips in your jeans, because you want to know where to cut. I used white chalk because I am ripping black jeans, but if you are ripping regular blue jeans I recommend a black sharpie or pen. I marked about 5 different parts of the jeans, but you may do as many as you like!
Step Two
Once you have all of your marks done, find a pair of scissors. Gently pinch the first layer of the jeans (do NOT cut all of the way through) and cut in the middle of the marked line on the jeans. From there you can easily cut-trace the rest of the line so it looks like it does in the picture above. Cut all of your marked lines.
The next part is the most difficult and time consuming. I usually watch tv while I do this part, haha. Take your tweezers and pull each individual string out of your cut line. Pull away from the cut, not horizontal to the cut. After about five minutes you will begin to see the rip in your jeans! The picture above is about halfway through making the rip.
THESE ARE THE FINSHED RIPPED JEANS! I also recommend putting your jeans through the washer and dryer!
